AAX, or Avid Audio eXtension, is the plug-in format used by Avid Pro Tools, software for editing and composing music. An .aaxplugin file contains the plug-in code and supporting resources that Pro Tools needs to run the audio effect or instrument.
The file is an installed software component rather than an audio recording or a Pro Tools session. Pro Tools loads compatible AAX plug-ins and makes them available in its plug-in and insert menus.
Pro Tools supports AAX plug-ins on Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS.
Do not open an .aaxplugin file as a document. Install the compatible plug-in with its vendor's installer, or place it in the appropriate AAX plug-in location, and then start Pro Tools.
After installation, the plug-in appears in Pro Tools' plug-in menus. AAX plug-ins are intended to run inside Pro Tools rather than as standalone applications.
An .aaxplugin file cannot be meaningfully converted to an audio file or another document format because it is executable plug-in software.
To use the same effect or instrument in another plug-in format, obtain a version supplied for that format by the plug-in vendor. Audio processed with the plug-in can be rendered or exported from a Pro Tools session.
