AppleDouble format should be the primary format when sending a Macintosh document. It makes it possible for a user that can't decode the AppleDouble header to read and use the Data fork of the document.
It also keep the Macintosh specific information in the AppleDouble header, so a user who can decode the AppleDouble header can get the extra information, such as customised icons, which is not essential to the document itself.
