The bbl file extension is used for bibliography files generated by BibTeX, a program in the TeX typesetting system. BibTeX reads bibliographic records from a database and writes the selected and formatted entries to a BBL file for inclusion in the document.
TeX source files are plain-text documents in which manuscript text is combined with TeX commands. TeX then processes the source and produces formatted output such as a PDF file. The source, bibliography database, and generated BBL file remain separate, which makes the source material easy to edit and process again.
TeX Live provides the TeX and BibTeX tools on Linux and Unix systems. MiKTeX provides them on Microsoft Windows, and TeXworks can be used to view or edit the plain-text files and run the typesetting workflow.
A bbl file can be viewed as plain text in TeXworks or another text editor. On Linux and Unix, use the BibTeX and TeX tools supplied by TeX Live; on Microsoft Windows, use MiKTeX or TeXworks.
It is usually not opened as a standalone document. To use its bibliography, open the associated TeX source file and run the BibTeX and TeX processing steps so that the BBL file is generated or updated and included in the final document.
A BBL file is generated output rather than a bibliography database intended for conversion. Bibliographic references can often be converted between similar formats for compatibility reasons, but changes to the bibliography or its style should be made in the associated BibTeX database file and followed by regeneration of the BBL file with BibTeX.
There is generally no useful standalone conversion from a BBL file to another document format. The associated TeX source can instead be processed to produce output such as a PDF file.
