COVID-19 file extension - Phishing / ransomware file

What is covid-19 file? How to open covid-19 files?

File type specification:

Ransomware encrypted file type icon Ransomware encrypted file type

A number of phishing, malware and ransomware attacks appeared during the COVID-19 outbreak and tried to take advantage of unsuspecting users with the usual arsenal of tricks, including fake e-mails with file attachments that potentially contain trojans, ransomware or other malicious software.

Always be mindful when opening file attachments from unknown sources.

You might have known file extensions hidden by default in your computer and do not see that the covid-19.docx (or something like that) in e-mail attachment is actually executable with exe extension hidden and opening that would infect your computer.

Help how to open:

When dealing with encrypted files caused by some ransomware, you basically have three choices:

1. restore from backup
2. wait for some researcher or AV company to release decryptor for your particular ransomware version
3. pay the ransom

However, even paying the ransom does not guarantee you that you will get your files back, as lots of ransomware are just pure scams.

How to convert:

You cannot convert these files to anything else. You first have to recover / decrypt the files before you can convert them to anything else.
