IBM Lotus Notes 5 was a Windows groupware and office productivity application with email, calendaring, contacts, task tracking and instant messaging features. Its .ctl thesaurus file provided data used by the application's language and writing features.
The file stores data used internally by Lotus Notes and is normally used automatically by the program. It is not intended to store messages, calendar entries or other user-created Notes documents.
Lotus Notes 5 and this thesaurus format are legacy technology. The file may still be needed by an existing Lotus Notes installation, but it is not a commonly exchanged document format.
Open the file with IBM Lotus Notes 5 on Microsoft Windows. In normal use, Lotus Notes loads its thesaurus data automatically, so the file should be left in the location where the application installed or stored it.
The file is not intended to be opened or edited as a standalone document. A text editor will not display the thesaurus in a useful form.
There is no practical general-purpose conversion for an IBM Lotus Notes 5 thesaurus file. It contains internal language data rather than user content that can be exported as a document.
To retain the thesaurus, keep the original file with the Lotus Notes installation. If the goal is to move language data to another application, it must be recreated or imported through that application's own thesaurus or dictionary tools, when supported.

The CTL file extension is associated with the PDP-10, a mainframe computer family manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) from the late 1960s. A .ctl file stores a batch script.
The file contains instructions for a batch job, allowing the system to run commands without interactive input. It is used with the PDP-10's operating environment and batch-processing tools.
This is a historical format tied to DEC PDP-10 systems.
On a PDP-10 system, submit the .ctl file to the operating system's batch facility. The file can also be viewed as text with a PDP-10 text editor.
After transferring it to a modern computer, a plain-text editor can usually display its contents, but it will not run the PDP-10 batch commands.
There is no standard conversion for a PDP-10 batch file. Its contents can be read as text and manually rewritten for another operating system's batch or scripting language.

StepMania uses the .ctl file to describe the contents of an SMZIP package. The file contains information about the game data in the package, while the package itself can contain game data for use by StepMania.
The .ctl file is supporting package data rather than a playable song, chart, or other game resource by itself. It is associated with StepMania for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X operating systems.
Open the SMZIP package with StepMania rather than opening the .ctl file separately. StepMania can use the description file as part of the package when it installs or processes the package.
If the file must be inspected independently, a text editor may display its contents, but changing it can prevent StepMania from correctly processing the associated package.
The .ctl file is package metadata and is not normally converted on its own. Keep it with the associated SMZIP package so that StepMania can use the package description.
There is no useful general-purpose conversion from a .ctl file to a playable StepMania file. To move the content, use StepMania's package handling and retain the complete package.

The ctl file extension is associated with the Microsoft Visual Basic integrated development environment.
A control using ActiveX technologies. An ActiveX control can be automatically downloaded and executed by a Web browser. ActiveX is not a programming language, but rather a set of rules for how applications should share information. Programmers can develop ActiveX controls in a variety of languages, including C, C++, Visual Basic, and Java.
An ActiveX control is similar to a Java applet. Unlike Java applets, however, ActiveX controls have full access to the Windows operating system. This gives them much more power than Java applets, but with this power comes a certain risk that the applet may damage software or data on your machine. To control this risk, Microsoft developed a registration system so that browsers can identify and authenticate an ActiveX control before downloading it. Another difference between Java applets and ActiveX controls is that Java applets can be written to run on all platforms, whereas ActiveX controls are currently limited to Windows environments.
Related to ActiveX is a scripting language called VBScript that enables Web authors to embed interactive elements in HTML documents
