The DF3 file extension belongs to POV-Ray, a ray-tracing program developed by Persistence of Vision Raytracer Pty. Ltd. A DF3 file is not a complete scene description. It provides sampled density data that a POV-Ray scene can use to define the distribution of a volume.
POV-Ray can load DF3 data for effects such as clouds, smoke, fog and other volumetric media. The scene file supplies the objects, lights, textures and rendering settings, while the DF3 file supplies the density field used by the relevant scene declaration.
It is a specialised support format rather than a general-purpose 3D exchange format.
A DF3 file is a binary data resource and is not intended to be opened as a standalone document. Use it with POV-Ray and reference it from a compatible POV-Ray scene. The Moray plugin can be used where the file is part of a Moray-created POV-Ray project.
Opening the file in a text editor will not display meaningful scene content because DF3 data is stored in binary form.
DF3 files do not have a practical general-purpose conversion path. They are density fields for POV-Ray rather than complete models or scenes, so common 3D converters cannot normally export them as ordinary geometry.
To obtain a different result, the density field must generally be regenerated in another format or recreated in the target rendering software. The original POV-Ray scene can render the DF3 data to an image, but that does not convert the density field itself.
