The IES file extension is used for a special photometric data format, created as standard by Illumination Engineering Society of North America (IESNA). It is the de facto industry standard file format for electronic transfer of photometric data.

An *.ies file basically contains the measurement of distribution of light (intensity) stored in ASCII format

This format is used by many 3D programs, that can use the photometry data.
