The imv file format is associated with Yahoo! Instant Messenger. Yahoo! ImVironments were themed, interactive environments used in Yahoo! Instant Messenger conversations. An IMV file contains resources for an ImVironment and was intended to be handled by Yahoo! Instant Messenger rather than read as a standalone document.
The format was associated with the Windows version of Yahoo! Instant Messenger. The Yahoo! Messenger service and its Windows client have been discontinued, so IMV files are unlikely to work with current software.
On Microsoft Windows, an IMV file was intended to be loaded or installed through a compatible version of Yahoo! Instant Messenger, rather than opened in a general-purpose file viewer.
Because Yahoo! Instant Messenger has been discontinued, a current application may not be able to open the file. Renaming it to another extension will not make it readable by other software.
There is no known standard converter for the Yahoo! Instant Messenger ImVironment format. IMV files were resources for Yahoo! Instant Messenger, not general-purpose documents or images.
If the file can still be used with a compatible copy of the Windows client, available content may be exportable from the client itself. Otherwise, it can generally only be preserved in its original form.
