File extension kwd is most likely best known for its use in KWord, a now discontinued word processor and desktop publisher application, by KOffice.org.
A .kwd files were probably used as main format in earlier version of KWord, whilst the latest versions switched to odt file format.
Older versions of Calligra Words did actually support KWD format, but that is no longer the case, leaving this format without much support. Same goes for AbiWord and latest versions no longer open .kwd files
Nowadays you have only two options how to open .kwd files, either find old copy of KWord or use AbiWord (some versions supposedly support it).
Much like any other document formats, also .kwd files can be converted to other document format.
