The M2 file extension is associated with the World of Warcraft MMORPG developed by Blizzard Entertainment. World of Warcraft (WoW) is an online role-playing experience set in the award-winning Warcraft universe.

WoW stores models as M2 files, which is a Word of Warcraft proprietary file format. It contains a lot of data such as bones, vertices, textures used, animations, game settings and more. These M2 files are stored in compressed MPQ files. The MPQ files of interest are common.mpq, expansion.mpq and patch-x.mpq in the WoW\data directory.

WoW Model Viewer supports export of .M2 files into another 3D graphic formats such as Lightwave 3D, Waveform OBJ file, Milkshape 3D, Autodesk 3DS file, X3D & X3D in XHTML, but export is not effective in all cases and some bugs can be see in converted file.
