SMAF stands for "Synthetic music Mobile Application Format". Yamaha specified it as a multimedia format for handheld devices, including mobile phones and personal digital assistants.
The format was primarily used for mobile ringtones and other synthetic music. A .ma1.mmf file is intended for devices using Yamaha's MA-1 sound chip. SMAF can contain musical performance data for the device's synthesizer, rather than ordinary recorded audio, and the full specification also supports graphics.
Yamaha MA-1, MA-2, MA-3, MA-5, and MA-7 sound chips were used in many mobile phones. Devices containing one of these chips could play compatible SMAF files. The format is now obsolete.
On Microsoft Windows, use SMAF Tools to open *.ma1.mmf files.
A compatible mobile phone with a Yamaha SMAF sound chip may also play the file after it has been transferred to the device.
SMAF files contain synthetic music data for compatible mobile devices rather than ordinary recorded audio. Use SMAF Tools to work with the SMAF file.
