A .map file are usually graphical images of various maps in either bitmap or vector graphical format. Might sometimes also contain navigation points, routes, points of interests, etc.
These files are used by many programs, the formats are however different and thus incompatible.

The optional error map extension file will contain a list of error addresses and source line numbers, grouped together for each source file in the application.
To create a detailed .map file, ensure the {D+} compiler directive is set, and the "Detailed Map File" option selected in the Project>Options>Linker page of the IDE.
As far as can tell, this .map file type is only meant for Delphi.
We do not know about any possible conversion for this type of .map files, it may not even be possible.

The map file extension is also used for one of the common files from Visual C++ projects made using Microsoft Visual Studio.
This type of .map file is used for linking purposes and contains all the linker information needed for the project.
These files are probably loaded only as part of Visual C++ projects, but you should be able to view them using any text editor.
