MDF (Measurement Data Format) is a binary file format for measurement data which was developed in 1991 by Vector together with Robert Bosch GmbH. In the meantime, the MDF format is the standard for measurement data in the automotive industry. Many Vector tools store the recorded data in MDF as standard. Many other providers support MDF or store their measurement data as an MDF file.

CANgraph is the tool of choice for user-friendly offline evaluation of the internal measured variables of an ECU and measured data from the CAN/LIN bus or other test equipment. The measured data recorded during network development, analysis, and ECU calibration can be read into CANgraph in various formats for post-processing. These include the widely-used MDF format, CSV and ATF formats, and all formats generated by CANalyzer or CANoe. Furthermore, it is possible to import text files containing measured data organized in tables.

The primary application area of CANape is in optimizing parameterization (calibration) of electronic control units. Parameter values are calibrated and measurement signals are acquired simultaneously during system run-time. The physical interface between CANape and the ECU might be made via the CAN bus with CCP (CAN Calibration Protocol), for example, or via FlexRay with XCP. Additionally, with its integrated "Diagnostic Feature Set" CANape offers symbolic access to diagnostic data and services. As a result it can offer the functional features of a fully-capable diagnostic tester.
Its use of standards makes CANape an open and flexible platform for all phases of ECU development.
