GLPK MPS files contain a mathematical program, including the objective function, constraints, variables, bounds and related model information. The format can also represent integer programming models.
MPS is a widely used interchange format for mathematical optimization software. GLPK reads MPS model files so that they can be solved or processed by the GLPK solver.
GLPK is free software from the GNU project and is available for Linux and other Unix-like systems. MPS remains an established format for exchanging optimization models, although GLPK also supports other model representations.
Use the GLPK command-line solver glpsol on Linux or Unix to read and solve the file. Specify the file as an MPS input file; standard and free MPS variants may require different input options.
This is a model-data file rather than a document intended for a graphical viewer. A text editor can display its contents, but it will not solve or interpret the mathematical program.
An MPS file normally does not need conversion before use with GLPK. The glpsol utility can read the model and write it in other model formats supported by GLPK, when a different representation is needed.
Conversion is meaningful only between mathematical programming model formats. Exporting the model may change features that the target format cannot represent, so the converted file should be checked before solving.

File extension mps is also used for some old spreadsheet format called the Linear and Integer Program Expression, a text file format, encoded as ASCII, which uses fixed columns. The format was developed by International Business Machines Corporation to express linear and integer programs. Probably discontinued years ago.
This type of .mps file contains spreadsheet data in ASCII format.
Still can be opened with tools, such gnumeric.
Export of data to other spreadsheet/database formats is possible.

Max Payne is a third-person action game developed by Remedy Entertainment. Its .mps files contain saved-game data for the Windows version, including the information needed to restore the player's progress.
Players create these files while playing and can load them later from within the game. Saving allows a player to preserve progress when ending or interrupting a game session, rather than starting again from an earlier point.
Open an .mps file from the Max Payne game's own Load or Continue menu. The file must be in the game's saved-game location for the game to detect it.
There is no need to open the file in a text editor or general-purpose application. If it is not detected, place it in the save-game folder used by the Windows installation that created it, and keep a backup before replacing existing saves.
.mps files are game-specific saved data and do not have a useful standard conversion to another file format. Use Max Payne to load the save and create another save through the game itself.
For transfer or backup, copy the file without changing its extension.
