The MQV format was used by Sony for movie files intended for Sony CLIE personal digital assistants. An MQV file generally contains MPEG-4 video.
MQV files can sometimes be played by treating them as QuickTime movie files. Changing the file extension from .mqv to mov may allow software that recognizes MOV files to open them, but renaming does not change the file's contents.
The format is obsolete and is no longer commonly used outside of older Sony CLIE-related media.
On Windows, try opening the file with QuickTime Player, MPlayer, or GOM Media Player. On macOS or Mac OS X, try QuickTime Player.
If a player does not recognize the extension, make a copy of the file and rename the copy from .mqv to .mov, then try opening it as a QuickTime movie.
MQV is an obsolete format, so current conversion tools may not recognize it directly. If a compatible player or converter can open the file, export or transcode it to a more common video format such as MOV or MP4.
Renaming an MQV file to MOV does not convert it; it only changes the filename extension.
