File extension nrg is used for the default CD/DVD image file format of a very popular burning software called Nero Burning ROM that is distributed as a part of Nero Multimedia Suite.
These .nrg files are different than ISO images. NERO nrg file format uses a variation of the Interchange File Format (IFF) and stores data in a chain of "chunks".
NRG image format is very popular and it is supported by many third-party applications. You can use Nero-Burning ROM, Nero Suite or ISOBuster and other CD/DVD burning applications to burn NRG Nero image file into recordable media or use some mounting software like Daemon tools to access to NRG Nero image file as virtual CD/DVD device.
On PCs with Microsoft Windows installed, you can use Nero Burning ROM to save NERO NRG image file to another ISO image format or third-party applications used to manage disk (ISO) image files (UltraISO, ISOBuster, MagicISO).
On PCs with Linux platform, you can use NRG2Iso converter and convert NRG NERO image file to ISO disk image format, that is more popular than NRG format and supported by many CD/DVD burning applications for Linux operating system.
NRG2iso also supports MAC OS X, but Apple MAC users must use version of NRG2iso with MAC OS X Linux wrapper.
