The PBI format, short for PC-BSD Installer, was developed for PC-BSD, a Unix-based operating system. A PBI package stores an application and the information required by the PC-BSD installer in a single file.
PC-BSD uses these packages to provide a convenient way to install applications. The format is intended for installation by PC-BSD software tools rather than for use as a general-purpose archive.
PC-BSD is no longer developed under that name, so PBI files are mainly encountered with older PC-BSD installations and software archives.
On a PC-BSD system, open the .pbi file in the file manager or with the PC-BSD software installer. Follow the installation prompts and provide administrative permission if requested.
A general archive utility may be able to inspect the file, but it will not install the application correctly.
A .pbi file is an application installer, so it does not have a useful general-purpose conversion format. To use the software, install the package on a compatible PC-BSD system.
