HP PaintJet PCL bitmap image file

File type category:
Bitmap image file

Date updated: September 22, 2026

Printer Command Language, commonly called PCL, is a page description language developed by HP as a printer protocol. This file uses PaintJet-compatible PCL commands and raster data to describe the bitmap that the printer should produce.

The file is intended as printer input, so it may include printing data in addition to the image itself. It is not normally used as an editable source image or as a standard bitmap such as a BMP or PNG file.

HP PaintJet printers and this type of printer data are legacy technology. Modern image applications and operating systems may not provide native support for the format.

How to open pj file?

The most reliable way to use an HP PaintJet PCL bitmap image file is to send it as raw print data to a compatible HP PaintJet printer. The printer must support the PaintJet PCL commands used by the file.

A PCL-capable rendering or printing application may be able to interpret it, but support for PaintJet-specific files is uncommon.

How to convert pj file?

There is no broadly supported direct conversion path for this legacy printer format. If a PCL-compatible application can render the file, the rendered output may be saved or printed to a more common image or document format.

Converting the file may lose printer-specific information, and simply renaming it does not convert the bitmap data.
