WinRoute connects to the link state port, TCP port 691, on an Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 server. It retrieves the link state information known to the routing master for the organization.
The dump contains GUIDs that WinRoute resolves to objects in Active Directory, connectors, and bridgehead servers. This makes the file useful for examining how Exchange routes mail between servers and connectors.
WinRoute was intended as a first troubleshooting step for routing problems in Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 mail-handling environments.
Open the .rte file with WinRoute from the corresponding Microsoft Exchange Server environment. WinRoute is the application that creates and interprets this routing table dump.
Because the dump is human-readable, a text editor may also display its contents, but it will not provide WinRoute's routing diagnostics or object resolution.
There is no standard conversion from a WinRoute .rte file to another file format. The file is a diagnostic snapshot rather than an interchange or document format.
To obtain current routing information, run WinRoute against the Exchange server again and save a new dump. Its readable contents can be copied into a text-based report if necessary.
