The PDP-10 was a mainframe computer manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) from the late 1960s onward. Its name stands for "Programmed Data Processor model 10". The system helped make time-sharing common and became influential in hacker culture because many universities and research laboratories adopted it in the 1970s, including MIT's AI Lab and Project MAC, Stanford's SAIL, Computer Center Corporation (CCC), and Carnegie Mellon University.
A PDP-10 file system used subfile directories to organize files. An SFD file is part of that system and is intended for use by PDP-10 software and operating-system tools, not as a standalone file for modern desktop applications.
The PDP-10 architecture was almost identical to the earlier PDP-6 architecture. Both used a 36-bit word length, while the PDP-10 slightly extended the instruction set with improved hardware implementation. Its instruction set included distinctive byte instructions that operated on arbitrarily sized bit fields; at the time, a byte did not necessarily contain eight bits. The SFD format is now a legacy format associated with PDP-10 systems.
An SFD file cannot normally be opened in a modern desktop application. It should be accessed from the PDP-10 system and file-system software that created it.
Opening the file as ordinary text will not provide a meaningful view of the subfile directory. A PDP-10 specialist may be able to inspect it using tools for the original system.
An SFD file is file-system metadata rather than a document or media file. To move the files it describes, use the original system or compatible PDP-10 file-system software to copy or export those files individually to a format supported by the destination system. The SFD file itself normally does not need to be converted.
