SMIL is an XML-based, easy-to-learn, HTML-like language standardized by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). It is designed for authoring rich-media presentations in which multiple media types are synchronized and displayed together.
A SMIL file contains presentation instructions, including references to media resources, their timing, sequencing and screen layout. The media itself is usually stored separately, so the file may depend on audio, video, image or text resources at specified locations. SMIL files can be written or edited with a plain-text editor.
The format is portable across platforms, but playback depends on software that supports SMIL; support in modern web browsers and media players is limited. The commonly associated MIME types are application/smil+xml and application/smil.
To inspect or edit an .sml file, open it in any plain-text or XML editor. This shows the SMIL markup but does not necessarily play the presentation.
