Spora is ransomware for Microsoft Windows that was first reported in early 2017. It initially spread mainly in former Soviet bloc countries and later appeared in other parts of the world.
The ransomware encrypts files and may change their names or extensions. Some reports associate the .spora file extension with affected files, but in most cases Spora does not add a suffix and removes the original extension after encryption.
A .spora file contains encrypted data from the affected file rather than a new file format with a documented structure.
A .spora file cannot be opened normally. The original file must be decrypted before it can be opened with the application that created it.
There does not appear to be a generally available decryptor for Spora-affected files. Renaming the file or changing its extension does not decrypt its contents.
A .spora file cannot be converted directly because its contents are encrypted. If the file can be decrypted, the recovered file can then be opened or exported using its original application.
When decryption is not available, recovery may require an unaffected backup or another original copy of the file.
