The sprite file extension is mainly used for a raster image format used on RISC OS platform.
Akin to BMP, only there can be multiple sprites in a file (with and without transparency), multiple sizes, multiple aspect ratios, color depths... it's more than an MBM because there is no actual requirement for any of the sprites in the file to relate to any other. It "can" be "the same thing in different resolutions", but it can just as easily be "anything".

File extension sprite has been also used for the default sprite format in the original version of Scratch 1.4.
Scratch's sprite is an object or character that can be programmed to perform actions based on scripts in a project using blocks. Each sprite has its own scripts, costumes, and sounds, and can move on its own.
By default, creating a new project will provide a sprite with an image of the Scratch Cat without any scripts. With version 1.4. users were able to load their own sprites.
These files can be only used in Scratch.
Possibly can be exported as individual icons/pictures that make up the whole sprite.
