Symbian OS was the first popular user-friendly operating system for smart phones based on Psion's operating system EPOC. Symbian was developed by Nokia, NTT DoCoMo, Sony Ericsson and Symbian Ltd.. The first version was released in 2001. Today is Symbian used only in smart phones developed by Nokia, but in the near future Nokia will replaced Symbian by Windows Phone 7.

Symbian OS supports many modern features, such as multitasking, memory protection, multi-touch, Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe Flash, widgets, video conferencing etc.. Pre-installed applications in phone can manage phone calls, SMS, MMS, multimedia, e-mails, Internet browsing etc.. Applications for Symbian are written in Symbian C++ programming language. Other applications are available to download on Nokia Ovi Store.
