The T64 format was designed by Miha Peternel for use with his C64S Commodore 64 emulator. Despite being called a tape format, a T64 file generally acts as a container for Commodore 64 programs rather than a recording of tape audio.
A T64 file can contain program data that an emulator loads as if it came from a Commodore 64 tape. It is one of the tape-image formats encountered in Commodore 64 emulation and software archives.
The format is supported on Microsoft Windows by VICE and Win64, as well as by other Commodore 64 emulators.
Open the file in a Commodore 64 emulator that supports T64 images. On Microsoft Windows, VICE and Win64 can open .t64 files; CCS64 also supports this format.
In the emulator, attach the file as a tape image and use the Commodore 64's tape-loading commands to load the program it contains.
A T64 file does not usually need conversion to run in a compatible Commodore 64 emulator. If another format is required, the program can often be extracted from the T64 file and saved as a standalone Commodore 64 program file, provided the emulator or a compatible utility supports that operation.
There is no need to convert the file merely to use it in software that supports T64 images.
