Tool Command Language, usually called Tcl, is an interpreted string-processing language developed by John Ousterhout at the University of California, Berkeley. It is used to issue commands to interactive programs and can be embedded in applications, which can extend Tcl with their own commands. Tcl has a peculiar but simple text-oriented syntax and permits algebraic expressions for simplicity. It is like a text-oriented Lisp and was originally designed as a scripting language, although it has also been used successfully for programs with hundreds of thousands of lines.
Tcl supports procedures, namespaces, packages called libraries through provide and require, exceptions, and dynamic loading of object code. It is eight-bit clean. Its principal variable types are strings, lists, and associative arrays; it has no structures. TLC files represent Tcl source prepared by a compiler or compilation tool for execution by Tcl. They belong to the Tcl application's deployment or runtime files rather than to its normally edited source files.
Tcl and its associated Tk graphical user-interface toolkit run on all flavors of Unix, Microsoft Windows, Macintosh, and VMS. Tcl also runs on Amiga and many other platforms.
Open a TLC file with the Tcl compiler or Tcl/Tk runtime that supports the compiled format. On Unix, Windows, and other systems supported by Tcl, a compatible Tcl installation may be able to execute the file through its runtime rather than display it as editable text.
If the file does not load, it may have been produced for a different Tcl version or compilation tool. A plain-text editor can inspect the file only when the compiled content includes readable text; it is not a substitute for a compatible Tcl runtime.
There is no generally reliable conversion from a compiled TLC file to another file format. To obtain editable Tcl source, use the original source files if they are available; decompiling a compiled file may be incomplete or unsupported.
A TLC file can be rebuilt with a compatible Tcl compilation tool when the original source and target runtime are known. It can also be replaced by an ordinary Tcl source file for systems that do not require compiled deployment.
