Many 3D companies invested large amounts of resources into writing their 3D Shockwave-3D exporter but then the dotcom meltdown pulled the plug on further SW3D SDK development from Macromedia.
The SW3D file format was originally thrust upon Macromedia by Intel, from Intel's 1990s IFX 3D gaming toolkit. Intel would do the same in 2004 by renaming the Shockwave-3D file format and their IFX gaming toolkit to the U3D file format, which itself would become technically obsolete in 2007.
