File extension WPS description:

The WPS file extension is associated with Microsoft Works, an office suite produced by Microsoft, which was offered as smaller, less expensive, and with fewer features than the Microsoft Office suite. Its core functionality includes a word processor, a spreadsheet and a database.

The .wps files were used for document files in older versions of Microsoft Works. The WPS format was discontinued by Microsoft in 2006 and was replaced by the standard Microsoft Word DOC format.

Microsoft Word will be able to open, edit and save WPS documents, when the Microsoft Works 6–9 File Converter is installed in the computer.

Some OpenOffice.org variants support import of the WPS documents via libwps library:
