The x3d file extension is associated with X3D, a scalable and open software standard for defining and communicating real-time, interactive 3D content for visual effects and behavioral modeling. It can be used across hardware devices and in a broad range of applications including CAD, visual simulation, medical visualization, GIS, entertainment, educational, and multimedia presentations.
X3D provides both the XML-encoding and the Scene Authoring Interface (SAI) to enable both web and non-web applications to incorporate real-time 3D data, presentations and controls into non-3D content.
X3D is the successor to the Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML). It improves upon VRML with new features, advanced APIs, additional data encoding formats, stricter conformance, and a componentized architecture using profiles that allows for a modular approach to supporting the standard and permits backward compatibility with legacy VRML data.
You can for example use the X3D-Edit tool by Don Brutzman to open and edit *.x3d models. However, you also find other programs capable of of working with this format.
Some dedicated 3D model translators support X3D format and can translate models between various formats.

The 3D crossword plugin was developed by Horizon, A Glimpse of Tomorrow Inc. It added an interactive three-dimensional crossword experience to supported web browsers.
The format uses the MIME type application/vnd.hzn-3d-crossword. An .x3d file is intended to be handled as part of the plugin and its crossword content, not as a standalone document in a modern browser.
Netscape, Internet Explorer and Opera support for this type of browser plugin is obsolete, so the format is now considered legacy and may be difficult to use on current systems.
To open an .x3d file, use the original 3D crossword plugin with a compatible installation of Netscape, Internet Explorer or Opera. The file may not open by double-clicking it unless the plugin and its browser association are installed.
Modern browsers generally do not support this legacy plugin format. If the original software is unavailable, there may be no practical way to open the file.
The .x3d files are intended for use by the original 3D crossword plugin, and no general-purpose conversion method is documented for this format.
