file extension ZIX - WinZix compressed archive file
File extension ZIX description:
At the time of writing, a .zix file is neither compressed nor encrypted and it's hard to see that the mechanism by which the files are obfuscated could be considered Digital Rights Management and thus fall foul of the DMCA.Most binary files you encounter on a computer start with a few bytes designed to give an indication as to what type of file it is. For example a PNG image starts with "‰PNG" when viewed in a hex editor. A program attempting to open such a file can use this identifying label to understand how to actually parse the file.
A zix file is simply a mis-identified file, it's the plain old original file you wanted but with the wrong label attached to it, although the old label is still there too. On simple zix files you can remove this bad label yourself with nothing more complicated than a hex editor, any hex editor should do, e.g.: XVI32 or you can download a windows-only HTML application I've written that will attempt to recover your file automatically and supports more complex zix files (i.e. zix files that contain more than one file).
Warning: WinZix has been known to install spyware on computers and may not compress files. Therefore, using WinZix is not recommended and you install it at your own risk. If you receive a "compressed" ZIX file you are advised to warn the sender and ask them to resend the file in a more common format (for example ZIP or RAR archive file format).

A Windows-only HTML Application to strip the rubbish off of a .zix file and recover the original file contents.
Apparently there's a new form of zix file (Zix 2.0) that incorporates something akin to ZIP compression amongst the file or files inside the zix file. Currently UnZixHTA does not preform the decompression since the current decompression algorithm is unknown. However, UnZixHTA should recover Zix 1.0 files, including zix files that contain multiple files.

From winzix.com claims to be a new compression format better than any of the others out there. However, many online users claim that WinZix contains spyware and that it has caused issues on their computers. On opening a .ZIX file in a hex editor, it appears as if that the .ZIX format is simply a wrapper format which is used to enclose a given file. Some users have claimed that compressing a 700KB file results in a 701KB file and this can be directly linked to the fact that WinZix does not appear to actually compress a file. It puts its own file header on the existing file and packages it as a .ZIX file. If you were to remove the first few bytes of the new .ZIX file, you should have the original file (in whatever format it was) back again. It has proven to leave files after uninstalling the program. In fact, it leaves an unknown process running, that cannot be seen from the taskmanager. It also appears to cloak itself, appearing as Internet Explorer "iexplore.exe". There are also cases where the program deleted the entire content of one folder.
