How to register a file extension

Unfortunately, there exists no central register for file extensions that would assign unique type of file to a specific file extension.

There are only a few high-quality on-line sources (such as our File-Extensions.org), that solely focus on file extensions and providing information that may help computer users to find basics about how to handle a given file type and what program to use.

File-Extensions.org maintains a database of ten thousands of records about file extensions and their associated software. The number of extensions in our library continues to grow and maintenance of the database with up to date information is a difficult and continuous task.

If you're a developer and you have your own file type for which you need to select a unique file extension that is not yet used by any other file type or software, you can view a list of unknown and unassociated extensions here on our website, or you can do a search in the upper left corner.

If you want to add your file extension to our library go through the link in the menu above and let us known in our forums with as much as relevant information possible so we can add a record of your extension to the File-extensions.org's database.

In the request please provide additional information about your file type, use, and it's purpose, the software which is or will be using the file type, the URL to the developer and software and if possible how to open, edit or convert this file type or any other valid information. The more information you can provide the better and easier it will be for future potential users to obtain the necessary information they are also seeking.

We recommend you follow this way - select the unassigned file extension and submit to us all necessary information about the type of file and application in order to avoid conflicts between various file types that share same extensions.

Please note, that the database may not be fully complete, but if the suffix is already used by someone, our aim is to get as much information about it so our database is the most complete and updated on the Internet.
