The cdf file extension was also in the past used for Network Common Data Form (NtCDF) format until it was replaced by nc extension.
NetCDF (network Common Data Form) is a set of software libraries and machine-independent data formats that support the creation, access, and sharing of array-oriented scientific data.
The cdf files are spectral data files stored in the AIA/ANDI FT-IR data format that can be submitted for searching provided they conform to the V1.1.3 of the AIA/ANDI FT-IR Data Interchange specification.
The recommended extension for netCDF files was changed from CDF to nc file extension in 1994 in order to avoid a clash with the NASA cdf file extension, and now it also avoids confusion with "Channel Definition Format" files.
