DWG
A dwg file extension is used for standard CAD file format, originally used by AutoCAD. A DWG is a proprietary format and can only be created in AutoCAD. Other CAD programs can usually import it but not create its proprietary form. Because of this, DWGs are often exported to DXF interchange format so that they can be seamlessly used in other CAD programs.
3DSMAX
Autodesk 3ds Max 3D modeling, rendering, and animation software actually uses .3ds or .max files and not .3dsmax files.
