There doesn't seem to be a direct way to just simply convert .iso file to .vmdk file (VMWare).

However, you can use the ISO inside a virtualized OS in VMware, by mounting the .iso file into virtual CD/DVD drive once the virtual machine is loaded and work it from there.

An iso file extension is generally used for common CD/DVD disk image format. ISOs are used as a standard backup format of physical disks and are widely supported by burning or virtualization software.

Files with iso extension may be also found as special game disk for ePSXe Sony Playstation emulator. Not standard ISO format.

Files with iso extension are used by the CALS as a graphics file format.

An iso file extension is associated with the InstallShield program. An iso file stores uninstall data.

Files with iso suffix could also be some old CAD files Cimagraphi software. Probably no longer actively used.


A vmdk file extension is used for default virtual disk format of VMware virtualization software. A vmdk file stores contents of virtual machine hard disk drive. There can be more vmdk files for each virtual machines, depending on the specified amount of virtual hard drive assigned to it. It also can store information about partitions virtual drive is able to access.
