Converter utilities capable of shs file to xls format conversion.
Typically .shs files were generated in previous versions of MS Office programs (Excel, Word etc.) when the user dragged certain elements to their desktop. An icon was created for the scrap file on the desktop and the file saved in default Windows\Desktop subfolder.
Users usually try to convert these old .shs back to their documents or spreadsheets (such as .xls), but such shs to xls conversion is actually not possible.
At best, you would need to the drag these files from desktop back to their respective programs and save the document. A conversion however, is not possible.

Usually this happens when the conversion would try to convert different types of data between each other, such as audio to image, or it can't be done because incompatibility between programs, caused by closed file formats, very limited support or by other problems.

SHS
Files with shs extension can be used for Clipboard files in Windows 95, 98, NT and ME. Every time you pressed Ctrl + C to copy something, it would be saved in Windows clipboard - a file with shs file extension.
Files with shs extension are quite often found as special OLE objects (scraps) from various Windows / MS Office apps.
XLS
Files with xls extension are best known as spreadsheets from Microsoft Excel. A spreadsheet is basically a grid of cells sorted in rows and columns. Each cell can contain text, numeric or formula data. Excel XLS spreadsheets can be opened in most other similar programs, such as OpenOffice.org Calc.
