Although both formats were used in Microsoft Word for Mac, it is unlikely the very old WORD format could be converted to one of the newer DOC/DOCX format.

DOC

A doc file extension is commonly used for text documents created in Microsoft Word word processor prior version 2003. Word's DOC documents can be opened in almost every (if not every) other word processor, such as OpenOffice.org Writer or iWork Pages.

A doc file extension is used throughout the time by many various applications for their document files.
