Since the introduction of XPS format in Windows as alternative to PDF, many users did struggle with recovery of these documents back to Microsoft Word or similar document preparation tools, but it never was simple and still isn't.
You can find various XPS recovery utilities on the Internet, but they might not always work 100% and quite often only the text is recovered. Throughout the years users used several workarounds to get XPS files, for example through Google Drive that offered export of .xps files to .pdf files, which could then be imported/opened in MS Word and saved back as standard documents. Still, formatting and text loss is not unheard of.
Least but not last, you can also try some of the online converters that are available on the Internet and try to convert your .xps file to anything that can be opened in MS Word, but direct xps to docx conversion will always be problematic.
