File extension encrypted seems to be also used by a ransomware featuring Donald Trump that appeared in late September 2016.
Apparently, the encryption mechanism of this ransomware does not work upon it's release. Something that may change in the future.
A special decrypter would be needed, if the ransomware actually encrypted your files.

File extension encrypted is most recently related to a new ransomware for MacOS operating system labeled as KeRanger.
Much like similar ransomware it encrypts users files and demands ransom to be paid in bitcoins.
This particular ransomware is distributed with infected Transmission Bittorent client.

Such files can only be accessed again and recovered when you pay the ransom in bitcoins. You can also wait until new decrypter is made and available for public.
