The .dexter file extension is used by a Troldesh ransomware variant. Like other ransomware, Troldesh encrypts users' files and demands bitcoin as a ransom.
The ransomware is distributed through ZIP files downloaded from internet links provided in spam email. A file with this extension contains encrypted data from an affected user file and cannot normally be used until it is decrypted.
A .dexter file cannot normally be opened with a standard application. The original file can be accessed only with a decryptor for this Troldesh variant, if a working decryptor exists.
There is no sensible direct conversion for a .dexter file. After the file has been decrypted, the recovered content can be opened and converted with an application that supports its original file type.
