Alcatraz Locker is ransomware that targeted Windows computers. It encrypts users' files, renames them with the .alcatraz suffix, and demands a ransom for their recovery.
The reported ransom demand was 0.5 BTC. An alcatraz file contains the encrypted data from the original file, so its content and original type cannot be determined reliably from the suffix alone. The extension is a marker added by the malware rather than a format used by ordinary software.
An alcatraz file cannot normally be opened by its original application while it remains encrypted. There is no known generally available decryptor for files affected by Alcatraz Locker. Renaming the file or changing its extension will not decrypt it.
