Abaqus/CAE is the graphical modeling and analysis environment in the Dassault Systèmes SIMULIA Abaqus software suite. A cae file stores an Abaqus model database rather than a general-purpose CAD model.
The database can contain parts, assemblies, materials, sections, loads, boundary conditions, analysis steps, interactions, and mesh settings. Abaqus/CAE uses this information to prepare and modify finite element analyses.
On Microsoft Windows, Abaqus/CAE opens and edits these files as its native model format. The analysis results are normally kept separately in an Abaqus output database, while the CAE model remains the editable source for further changes and new analyses.
Install Abaqus/CAE on Microsoft Windows and open the cae file from its Open command. The file should generally be opened with the same or a compatible Abaqus release that created it.
A cae file is not normally converted as a complete model by a general-purpose converter. Abaqus/CAE can generate an Abaqus input file for analysis and export selected geometry or mesh data through its supported export functions.
These exports may not preserve the full Abaqus model database, including all analysis settings and relationships.

The cae file extension is also used for an encrypted document file format used by Caditor text editor. It is an open source, portable tabbed text editor.
Probably obsolete software. Last version was released in 2010.
