The .edgel file extension is associated with EdgeLocker, a ransomware threat that first appeared in late December 2016. The malware encrypts users' files and marks them with the .edgel suffix.
The affected file still contains the encrypted contents of the original user or multimedia file, but its data cannot normally be read by the application that created it. EdgeLocker demanded a ransom of 0.1 BTC in exchange for a decryption key.
A working decryptor for EdgeLocker is not known. The extension is associated with ransomware-encrypted files rather than with software that creates ordinary files.
There is no ordinary application that can open an .edgel file while it remains encrypted.
Recovery requires a suitable EdgeLocker decryptor or an intact, unencrypted backup. A working decryptor is not currently known.
An .edgel file cannot be meaningfully converted while its contents remain encrypted. It must first be decrypted or recovered from an unencrypted copy.
After recovery, the original application can open the restored file and export it to another format if necessary.
