An Embedded SQL file combines database queries with C or C++ program code. The SQL statements allow the program to retrieve, insert, update, or otherwise work with data in a SQL database.
The file is normally passed to an embedded SQL precompiler. That tool converts the embedded statements into C or C++ code and produces source code that can then be compiled with the rest of the application.
This is a source code format rather than a standalone database file. Its use depends on the embedded SQL development tools and database system for which the source was written.
Open an .eql file in the embedded SQL development environment or precompiler that created it. A programming editor or IDE can also display and edit the file as text, although it may not understand the embedded SQL syntax.
To use the file, run it through the appropriate embedded SQL precompiler and then compile the generated C or C++ source with the application's normal build tools.
An .eql file is not normally converted to another document format. To build a program from it, process it with the matching embedded SQL precompiler; the result is C or C++ source code for compilation.
Moving the source to a different embedded SQL system may require manual changes to the SQL syntax, precompiler directives, and database access code.
