A helpmeencedfiles file is a file encrypted by a variant of Samas/SamSam ransomware. The ransomware renames affected files with the helpmeencedfiles suffix.

The helpmeencedfiles file extension was used by some later variants of Samas/SamSam ransomware, which first appeared in early January 2017. These variants encrypted the contents of affected files.
The ransomware also places a ransom note named HELP-ME-ENCED-FILES.html in affected folders. The helpmeencedfiles file is not a normal file format; its suffix indicates that the original file was encrypted and renamed by the ransomware.
A helpmeencedfiles file cannot normally be opened by an application. A proper decryptor for the Samas/SamSam variant is required to recover its contents.
If an unaffected backup exists, restoring the original file from that backup is an alternative to decrypting the encrypted file. Renaming the suffix does not decrypt the file.
A helpmeencedfiles file cannot be meaningfully converted while it remains encrypted. Conversion software cannot substitute for a proper decryption utility.
After successful decryption, the recovered file can be opened or converted with software that supports its original file type.
