Hewlett Packard developed HP PCL 3 in 1984 for their first Laser Jet printer and continually improved HP PCL to provide advanced printer functionality for their evolving product line of LaserJet printers.
Hewlett Packard released HP PCL 5 in 1990 to support the LaserJet III. This version of PCL included support for scalable fonts and also included HP GL/2, the control language used for HP's CAD plotters that provides vector graphics support. HP PCL5 (in conjunction with HP GL/2) supports mono spaced and proportionally spaced fonts, rotated fonts, scalable fonts, filled/shadowed/mirrored fonts, downloaded fonts and downloaded predesigned forms and overlays.
