Apple ProRes 422 HQ is a professional video codec developed by Apple. It uses 10-bit, 4:2:2 video encoding and is intended to preserve image quality during editing and post-production.
An hq file contains video encoded with ProRes 422 HQ. The ProRes family supports HD, 2K, 4K, 5K, 8K and SD video workflows, although the resolution and file container depend on how the video was created and saved.
On Apple macOS and Mac OS X, Apple QuickTime can play compatible ProRes video files. ProRes remains in use in professional video production, editing and delivery workflows.
On macOS or Mac OS X, open the hq file with QuickTime Player. It can play the file if the video is stored in a compatible media container and the installed system supports ProRes 422 HQ.
If QuickTime does not recognize the extension, the file may use a container or naming convention that the player cannot identify automatically.
A video-editing application or media converter with ProRes 422 HQ support can export or transcode the file to another video codec or container, such as one suitable for distribution or web playback.
Conversion re-encodes the video and may reduce its quality. Renaming the hq file does not convert its contents.
