IAFA, or Internet Anonymous FTP Archives, is a format and set of guidelines for documenting public-access FTP archives. An IAFA document can describe an archive and the resources it makes available, using textual fields intended for indexing and cataloguing.
An IAF file is generally readable as plain text; it does not contain the FTP files described by its records.
Because an IAF file is a text-based IAFA document, it can be opened with any text editor on Windows, macOS, or Linux. A plain-text editor is preferable to a word processor so that the file's original formatting is preserved.
IAFA documents can be copied or parsed into another cataloguing or database system, but this generally requires preserving or mapping the IAFA fields manually.
