Industry Foundation Classes XML is an XML serialization of the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) data model, an open standard used by Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. It stores information about building elements, their properties, geometry, and relationships.
An IFCXML file uses plain text and XML tags and is intended as a replacement for the plain-text IFC file format.
Tekla BIMsight, a BIM coordination application for Microsoft Windows, can use IFCXML files when importing model data. The format is intended for model exchange rather than as the primary project file of a particular BIM application.
Open the file with Tekla BIMsight on Microsoft Windows. Use the application's import or open command to load the BIM model.
An XML editor can display the file's text and tags, but it will not provide a usable 3D view or interpret the BIM relationships.
To convert an IFCXML file, import it into a BIM application that supports IFCXML and export the model to IFC or another format supported by that application. The available export formats and the preservation of model data depend on the software used.
Conversion generally applies to the BIM model as a whole rather than to separate parts of the file. Changing the XML text directly is not a practical way to convert the model, because the format contains structured relationships and model data that must be interpreted by BIM software.
