LEGO Digital Designer, developed by The LEGO Group, is a Windows application for building LEGO models on a computer. Its .lif files contain resource data and assets used by the program.
These files support the application's installed resources and are separate from the files used to save users' LEGO models. They are generally intended to be read by LEGO Digital Designer rather than edited manually.
LEGO Digital Designer is no longer actively developed, but existing installations and their resource files may still be used on Microsoft Windows. The Windows utility LIF Extractor can extract data from these files.
On Microsoft Windows, open a .lif file with LEGO Digital Designer if it belongs to that application's installation. LIF Extractor can be used to inspect or extract the resources from the file.
There is no known useful conversion for a .lif file. If access to its contents is needed, use LIF Extractor to extract the stored resources rather than convert the file.

Record marked as obsolete and not updated for a long time.
CA-Clipper was an application development system from Computer Associates. Its tools could be customized for different operational requirements.
A .lif file contains compressed files used by the CA-Clipper installer. The format is obsolete and is mainly found in old CA-Clipper installation packages for Microsoft Windows.
Open a .lif file with the original CA-Clipper installation program on Microsoft Windows. These files are installer archives rather than general-purpose archives, so modern archive utilities may not recognize them.
No known conversion is available for a CA-Clipper .lif file. If the contents are needed, use the original CA-Clipper installer to extract or install them, then work with the resulting files in their native formats.

The .lif file extension is used for pattern files associated with Game of Life, a mathematical puzzle and cellular automaton game. A pattern file preserves the positions of the cells that make up a starting configuration.
The file belongs to the Game of Life program rather than being a general-purpose document. It is used to load a saved or shared pattern into the application so that the pattern can be displayed and simulated.
Game of Life is available on multiple platforms. The format is intended for patterns within compatible Game of Life software and is not generally used outside that context.
Open the file with Game of Life on a supported platform. Use the program's open or import command to load the pattern.
If the file is not associated with the application, select Game of Life manually. Opening it in a general-purpose program is unlikely to display the pattern correctly.
This particular .lif file type does not normally convert to a different kind of document. Its contents are a Game of Life pattern, not text, an image, or another conventional document.
Compatible Game of Life programs may provide commands to import or export patterns in other Life-pattern formats, but support depends on the particular program and format.

Logical Interchange Format is a simple file system format developed by Hewlett-Packard. It was used on older HP computers, including systems based on HP-PA, for boot media and file interchange.
A lif file contains a header and a single directory followed by the files stored in the volume. Directory entries use 10-character, case-sensitive filenames and include 2-byte file type identifiers.
LIF is an obsolete format associated with legacy HP hardware and software rather than current general-purpose systems. Its contents may still be useful when recovering files or working with older HP system media.
A lif file normally requires software that specifically supports HP Logical Interchange Format. On Unix-like systems, the lifutils utilities can list LIF directories and extract files from LIF volumes.
It will not usually open as a document in a standard desktop application. The appropriate HP software or a LIF utility is needed, depending on the type of file stored in the volume.
There is no general-purpose conversion from LIF to another file format. A LIF volume can instead be read or extracted with LIF-compatible utilities.
After extraction, each contained file can be converted separately if an application supports that file's particular format.
