The folder directory must contain a file called PMFOLDER.ID, which is a single NULL-terminated line representing the folder's long name. More information in the WGUIDE.HLP file in the program directory.

The mai file format is a proprietary format used by Sony video-recording devices. A mai file contains a small preview image that represents a related video, rather than the video data itself.
On compatible Sony media, the mai file is stored with the corresponding MQV movie file so the device can display a thumbnail when browsing recorded videos.
A mai file is normally used automatically by compatible Sony equipment and is not intended to be opened separately. Keep it with the related MQV movie file when copying or restoring recordings to the device.
The mai file is a device thumbnail rather than source video or a conventional image intended for editing, so it has no usual conversion workflow.
To obtain a usable image, extract a frame from the associated MQV movie or create a new thumbnail in image software.
